Its's Your Choice: Stagnation or Progress Please feel free to download the new Tukwila Village Overview PDF (as of 7/2/11)
The original intent of the Tukwila Village project was to create an "urban village" combining retail and housing with a public gathering area in order to provide a safe and attractive community space. Located at Tukwila International Boulevard (TIB) and South 144th Street this development was intended to spur growth and development in the surrounding area. The city recognized that public investment could help direct growth and development in a manner that would be advantageous to all the citizens of Tukwila and continue to improve the atmosphere of the TIB neighborhood (Original RFQ-2001).
It is the opinion of the Tukwila International Boulevard Action Committee that a high quality development on this property is an essential step toward making a lasting difference in the community.
This project is now roughly 10 years old and in danger of languishing even more. The City Council has been reviewing the project again and it is possible they may decide to table the project again and DO NOTHING. They may also decide to sell the property piecemeal to developers who will build whatever THEY want on the site. It is our position that both of these alternatives are unacceptable.
Light Rail will be built in 2009. This project will bring many more people into our neighborhood. It is up to us to give them a positive reason to visit. In addition it will attract considerable attention to the area as people travel to and from the new Light Rail terminal. What do we want them to see? Now all they see is a large piece of undeveloped dirt. This sends the wrong message to anyone looking for an exciting and vibrant place to live; however, it looks very inviting to anyone seeking a location for illegal activities.
We can continue to improve TIB or we can let it degrade. We fear that another season of inaction by the council will cause this project to stagnate and die. We have made so many strides in the last several years improving TIB. Don't let this opportunity to do something that can really improve our neighborhood slip away.
Tukwila Village could be the spark that spurs other property owners to develop their holdings. There are private property owners who have substantial property on TIB who are not acting to improve their land. We believe they are waiting to see what the city intends to do with Tukwila Village. Help us motivate the City Council to take action.
